Tongyu “Toni” Zhao 趙彤宇
b. Hubei, China, 1993. Tongyu Zhao is an artist based in her guts, she thinks about material encounters and lived experiences. In an often chaotic expression, Tongyu intends to slow down experience and expand life’s weirdness.
Tongyu has performed and exhibited at Mana Contemporary, Links Hall, Rational Park and Co-prosperity Sphere and alternative spaces like the Hebru Brantley Studios and the Meekling Press in Chicago, IL. She has performed at the Centre A gallery in Vancouver, Canada as part of the group show “Here I only worry about my feet, your feet, everybody’s feet” curated by Christian Vistan (2016). She’s a recent recipient of the the Ox-Bow School of Art LeRoy Neiman Fellowship at Saugatuck, MI. Tongyu received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016.
